This injection is placed in the sheath that surrounds the nerve root and is performed to help temporarily decrease pain and to more precisely define it. A local anesthetic and a therapeutic steroid are used to decrease inflammation and pain. The relief can vary from long-term to minimal depending on specific symptoms. The procedure is only effective if there are symptoms present at the time of the injection.
