What is the iovera° treatment?

The ioverao treatment uses the body’s natural response to cold to immediately reduce pain without leaving anything behind. It precisely targets the source of your pain for immediate and lasting relief without the use of drugs or pharmaceuticals. The iovera°  treatment is FDA cleared to block pain.

How does the iovera° treatment work?

The ioverao treatment works by applying targeted cold to a peripheral nerve which immediately prevents the nerve from sending pain signals. The effect of the cold on the nerve is temporary and does not cause permanent damage because it leaves the structural components of the nerve intact. The nerve is restored to function after several months.

The iovera° treatment is minimally invasive and can be performed at the Capitol Pain Institute and at any of its satellite pain clinics. You will be awake throughout the treatment and should be able to leave immediately afterwards. The average treatment time for one pain site is approximately 20-30 minutes. Here is a CBS news report showing how it is done for knee pain.

IS iovera° RIGHT FOR ME?

What kind of results can I expect?
The iovera° system delivers a very precise treatment. When the treatment is applied to a specific nerve, it will immediately interrupt that nerve’s ability to send a pain signal. Your pain management specialist can discuss the specific results that you can expect from the iovera° treatment.

How long does it last?
The duration of the pain relief depends on the location of the nerve being treated. Your pain doctor can discuss how long you can expect your results to last.

What kinds of activities can I do?
You’ll need to take it easy for a day following your treatment. After that, you can pursue your normal activities and reasonable exercise. As part of your consultation, your physician will tell you more about appropriate post-treatment activity levels.

What should I be doing?
Your pain doctors will use their discretion, but there is very little that you need to do before your treatments. During the consultation with your pain management consultant, please discuss your daily medications such as blood thinners, pain medications, and any health conditions or health history.

How soon will I recover?
Most patients experience immediate pain reduction after treatment so please refer to your pain management team for guidance on post-treatment activities. There is little downtime following treatment, and you should be able to resume your normal activities on the treatment day. There is typically no general anesthesia required, and most patients are able to drive home following treatment if advised by their physician. Side effects are typically transient and comparable to other needle based treatments, such as bruising and soreness at the treatment site.

Short Term Recommendations:
Keep treatment area clean and dry during healing.

For soreness relief:

  • Ice may be applied.
  • OTC pain medications (per physician’s discretion).

  • Return to normal activities slowly per your physician’s discretion.
  • Seek guidance around safe levels of exertion and joint stress.

Long-Term Recommendations:

  • Seek opportunities for joint rehabilitation and strengthening, if necessary.
  • Exercise daily for a period appropriate with your age.
  • Live a healthy lifestyle with focus on weight management.
