Also known as herpes zoster, shingles is a blistering and painful skin rash that is caused by the same virus which causes chickenpox. It commonly only affects one side of the body. This illness often occurs in people who are over 50 years of age and as the age advances so do the risks. It can however occur in anyone who has already had the chicken pox regardless of age. Once one has the chicken pox, the virus can remain dormant in the nerve roots for years afterwards, and it is then re-triggered by something and shingles occurs.
